Puppy Training: Nipping At Your Heels

Puppy Training: Nipping At Your Heels

Much like kids, puppies teethe at some point in their development and during this time, they enjoy chewing because it soothes their sore, tender gums. Unfortunately for us, this natural chewing usually destroys a lot of shoes and furniture. You can't stop your puppy from chewing to soothe the pain, but you can redirect his attention to whatever you want him to chew on.

To train your puppy to stop chewing you favorite pair of Nikes, always have on hand a lot of chew toys. When he goes for the shoes, replace his attention to the chew toy. Be sure that your puppy always has something to chew on. A great way to do this is keep him in a restricted area that doesn't have a lot of temptations. When he goes for the wrong object, firmly say "no" and then replace it with the chew toy.

NEVER scold him after the crime because he will have no clue what you are talking about. Another reason for the restricted area. Easier to watch…
